R1 vs R2 CBSE Question Paper Pattern

The differences in the R1 and R2 question paper patterns for CBSE Class IX English are carefully calibrated to shape how students demonstrate learning, not just what they learn. While the overall structure and weightage (Reading 20, Writing & Grammar 30, Literature 30, Internal Assessment 20) remain identical, the design of questions, degree of scaffolding, and response expectations differ in meaningful ways.

In Section A (Reading), R1 uses a descriptive/discursive passage (10 marks) along with a case-based passage (10 marks), whereas R2 assigns 12 marks to a factual/literary passage and only 8 marks to the case-based one.

This signals that R1 expects students to engage more with interpretative and opinion-driven reading, while R2 places slightly greater emphasis on clear comprehension of concrete information. The balance in R1 leans toward inference and reflection; in R2, toward clarity and retrieval with some interpretation.

In Section B (Grammar), the core syllabus is identical, but the question formats differ. R1 includes editing/omission tasks, which require students to identify and correct errors in context—this demands a higher level of language awareness.

R2 replaces this with paragraph completion (fill-ups with options), a more guided format that supports recognition over production. This reflects a shift from open-ended accuracy (R1) to supported correctness (R2).

The Writing section shows some of the clearest contrasts. R1 includes informal invitations and longer descriptive/narrative essays (200–250 words), encouraging elaboration and expressive detail. R2, however, introduces poster-making and speech writing based on cues, and reduces the narrative essay length (150–180 words).

These changes make R2 tasks more structured, visual, and bounded, helping students organise ideas within clearer limits. R1, by contrast, allows greater freedom and depth of expression.

In Section C (Literature), R2 assigns 15 marks to extract-based questions (three extracts), compared to 10 marks in R1. Extract questions are typically more text-bound and guided. R1 compensates by placing relatively more emphasis on constructed responses, including two separate long-answer questions (each 5 marks), often requiring extrapolation and thematic analysis. R2 merges these into one long-answer question, reducing the demand for extended interpretation.

Overall, the R1 paper encourages analytical depth, interpretative flexibility, and longer independent responses, while the R2 paper provides more scaffolding, clearer boundaries, and greater reliance on guided formats.

For students, this translates into different exam experiences: R1 demands more self-driven articulation and critical engagement, whereas R2 supports students in demonstrating learning through structured, step-by-step responses.
